I can't believe I'm the first to review this great book! It's by Andrew Lang, the man who edited the "Blue Fairy Book" and the rest of that series. This book is in the same style as the fairy books (and Henry Ford provides his usual excellent illustrations), except, as the title implies, the stories are about real animals, instead of fairies. Most of them are about cats and dogs, but there are some about rabbits, birds, dolphins, wolves, etc. Some of the chapters are descriptions of a species and how it lives. Some are about hunting and fishing. Most are stories about pets or about people taming wild animals. Some of the most interesting stories are about Alexandre Dumas and his pets, like the time he took a bear to a costume party and made people think it was a friend of his in disguise.Be sure you buy the Dover edition; the others are cheap POD's copied from Google Books.
If you like this book, there's a sequel called the Red Book of Animal Stories. That book deals more with exotic (Asian and African) and imaginary animals, while this one deals more with ordinary (European) animals and pets.
